Qu’Appelle Valley – Darrell Noakes

This day in 1987

Looking Back, Personal Projects, Photography, Stories

One day in early September, 1987, I got a call from a freelance writer looking for a photographer to accompany him on an assignment.

Dizzyingly lost in the Labyrinth

The large stone grows larger as you spiral in toward it. Step briskly. The world whirls until your woozy vision transforms the ground you thought you knew.

This day long ago

Warm evening on the cusp of autumn. Flocks of Canada geese honking overhead and harvest dust tinting evening skies remind you that fall is already well underway.

The Fowl Supper

It’s fall supper season in Saskatchewan. Back in 1986, they still referred to these as fowl suppers. Did you wonder what it was like behind the scenes, before the doors opened?

This is a composite of 15 individual photos taken on two different days, under changing weather and lighting conditions. Each photo was approached from a different angle, then layered to produce a dreamlike rendering.

Conceptualizing Water and Wind

Someone has taken a lot of time to paint the fire hydrants in the Village of Elbow. Every time I visited, friends would say to me, “You should get photos of the fire hydrants.” So I did. But what to do next?

At last, a clear night sky!

Electric night over Gardiner Dam and Lake Diefenbaker. Too many nights when the aurora should be good, we got clouds. Not this night. I barely felt the cold.
